Combined Training Rules
Combined Training at Area level consists of a Dressage Test, followed by a Show Jumping Round an hour or so later. The tests vary from Prelim up to Novice, with jumping heights ranging from 60cm - 100cm. The scores are based on a combination of the two disciplines, so the aim is to do a nice Dressage Test followed by a clear round in the Show Jumping phase. It's basically a One Day Event, without the Cross Country phase.
It is ran on an All Weather surface with the Qualifiers being held at Solihull in April and the Championships being held at Aston Le Walls in September. Teams and Individuals can enter but if you are part of a Team, you will automatically be judged as an Individual also.
DRESSAGE PHASE:
Rider attire:
- Black, Navy or Tweed show jackets.
- Long boots, or jodhpur boots with gaiters, or jodhpur boots with clips.
- Hats up to BRC standard (mandatory!)
- White jodhpurs (new rules allow black and navy too).
- White or cream stocks preferred. Coloured stocks are allowed.
- Long hair to be in a bun or a hair net.
- A bridle or numnah number or a mix of both to be worn on either side of the horse. Number bibs must be worn if you don’t have bridle or numnah numbers.
- Back protectors are allowed, but not often worn by riders in Dressage.
- Spurs are allowed in classes above Intro level if needed.
- Schooling whips are allowed.
Horse attire:
- Snaffle bridles, no martingales. (Check the BRS rule book on our Rules & Regulations page for more details on bits allowed as some snaffles aren’t allowed. They are very picky!) No bit clips.
- Breastplates and nosebands are allowed.
- Plain non-bright numnah’s, White numnah’s preferred.
- Fly veils are allowed.
- A bridle number can be worn but must be on both sides, or on the numnah both sides.
- No exercise boots, but they are permitted in the warm up.
Other notes:
- Horses should be plaited.
- Schooling whips are only allowed in tests at Intro and Prelim level, but you can work in with them at all levels.
- Callers for tests are allowed.
- If the judge hears you talk to your horse during the test, points will be deducted (speak to them quietly and out of earshot!)
- Doing three incorrect movements will result in elimination.
- Fall of rider will be elimination.
SHOW JUMPING PHASE:
Rider attire:
- Show Jackets must be worn, any colour.
- Show Shirts.
- Long boots, or jodhpur boots and chaps/gaiters, or jodhpur boots and clips.
- White or beige jodhpurs (new rules allow navy and black).
- Stocks or ties encouraged.
- Hats up to BRC standard (mandatory!)
- Number bib must be worn, bridle numbers are allowed also, but are not visible enough on their own.
- Whips must be the padded type.
- Back protectors are encouraged, but not mandatory.
- Spurs are allowed if needed.
Horse attire:
- All types of bridles are allowed. No bit clips.
- All colour numnah’s are allowed but Navy, Brown, Black & White are encouraged.
- Exercise Boots can be worn.
- Fly veils and nose nets are allowed.
- Plaiting is not necessary, but is allowed if you want to.
Other notes:
- You cannot use your whip before jumping the first fence.
- Course walk times are announced in advance and usually 2hourly so don’t miss your course walks as you probably won’t get another chance.
- Wait for the bell before you begin.
- If you get eliminated in round 1, you cannot take part in round 2.
- Three refusals is elimination.
** COMBINED TRAINING TIP **
"The competition is about control and obedience. If your horse is tense, use corners to re-establish control."
" Experienced horses benefit from jumping small fences (less than two feet) to focus on technique rather than height."
- Pippa Funnell, BE Eventer.
